What's on the jukebox, Jo?

record player

I've had a tonne of different songs on this week but today has to be a song or two about moving house as I'm helping my best friend move to a new city today.

Here are three of my favourite "moving" songs:

Moving by Pete and the Pirates

Moving by Supergrass

Moving by Jeffrey and Jack Lewis

Have a listen! Happy Friday, folks!

Handmade Christmas Cards

There are so many gorgeous, handmade Christmas cards out there that I could quite easily buy one for every day of the year!

Being a huge fan and supporter of all those fellow small businesses, run by inspiring and incredible solo creatives, I thought I'd share some of my favourite handmade Christmas cards.

Remember folks, behind these designs are hard working individuals, who do a tonne of work that often goes unnoticed. If you want to have such unique and beautiful designs to choose from then remember to buy handmade!

Happy Christmas card shopping!

Three Social Media Tips

tips social media

Twitter / to increase your followers, follow people with similar interests every day. You're more likely to get a reciprocal follow back.
Facebook / you can edit your comments just by clicking on the little pen icon. Great if you've spotted a typo.

Instagram / don't post on someone's account directly asking them to follow you back. That's spam and just not cool.

Three Quick Sewing Tips

1) Check your bobbin has enough thread on it before starting to sew.

2) Press your seams out as you go. This makes for a much neater finished project.

3) Don't put your foot down on the pedal when you're learning to sew. Take it slow as it gives you much more control over your project and makes for a better end result.

Facebook / for keyboard shortcuts, click on "p" to start writing a new post.

Blog Gem: Hester's Handmade Home

Yay, it's Blog Gem time! This month I'm finding out all about the face behind another favourite blog of mine, Hester's Handmade Home.

Hello! Who is the face behind the blog?
Hi I’m Hester and I write craft/diy books and run the website www.hestershandmadehome.com
where I post a new craft/diy vlog every Thursday. I love upcycling, reusing and hacking so you can
find a lot of those tutorials on my website! Last summer my first book Furniture Hacks got
published by Cico books and my second book Crafting with Mason Jars is scheduled to be released
in March.

What is your creative space like?
I just moved into my new home and the whole of the downstairs is my studio space. You can find it’s transformation from bland sitting room to stylish studio on my blog. My colour scheme is white
so I can easily transform the room's look for photo and film shoots. I do have some textures though
like brick and wood for added interest.

If you had to take only one craft tool to a desert island, what would you choose and why?
Washi tape, my friends always joke that I cover everything in tape and it probably would come in
handy on the island ;)

How do you work and get inspired?
I love reading magazines and are forever tearing out pictures. I also pick up inspiration from my
surroundings like people you see on the street, clouds drifting by, the colours of flowers and plants.
I live by the beach and long dog walks are perfect to get in the right creative state of mind.

What top tips would you give to anyone starting a blog?
Find your niche, your passion and start writing about it. Don’t do it to become an overnight  internet success or to become rich, blog because you love it and you want to show the world your makes, photos or written word.

Is there a story behind the name 'Hester's Handmade Home’?
No not really, my cousin who helped me set up the website said it should have a name that is relevant to the site you run so people can easily find it on Google. Hester is my name and I make
stuff for my home so Hester’s Handmade Home :)

If you could go to a Creative Blog Award dinner with any 5 people and/or fictional characters
(dead or alive), who would you choose?
The whole Kinfolk team, I’m obsessed with this magazine! Ingvar Kamrad (the founder of IKEA) as I love the store and ability to hack the product ;) , Jim Henson as I’m obsessed with the muppets
(even named my dog Kermit…), Paul Lowe from the Sweet Paul website and magazine and
Martha Stewart, the queen bee of everything crafts and homemaking!

And finally...if you had to choose one song to represent 'Hester's Handmade Home', what would it be and why?
Something happy, light, slightly folkie and upbeat if you have suggestions let me
know!
Thank you so much for stopping by, Hester and telling us all about your creative, blogging world! Great advice about starting a blog - just be yourself folks!

I hope you've all enjoyed this month's Blog Gem. Catch up on all my interviews here.

Happy blogging folks!

Three Quick Sewing Tips

1. Use a lint roller to pick up any stray fabrics on your finished sewing project. This is especially great when working with white cotton, which shows up all those little bits of fluff and thread!

2. Wipe down the table before cutting out fabric on it. You will be so disappointed if your fabric picks up a bit of last night's dinner and ruins your project before you've even begun!

3. Clean your iron before starting a project, so that you don't get any nasty bits on your fabric. There are loads of tips on the internet for the best ways to do this. I particularly like Martha Stewart's video demo.
